Alex Potts QC is a Queen's Counsel of England and Wales, admitted to the Bars of England and Wales, and Bermuda.
With a particular focus on complex disputes, Alex handles matters in the fields of banking, financial services, investment funds, (re)insurance, professional negligence, commercial contracts, company law, trusts, asset recovery, white collar crime, and contentious insolvency.
Alex's practice also extends to matters of public, constitutional and administrative, regulatory, telecommunications, employment, planning, and environmental law.
Alex has conducted cases and appeared as leading counsel before a variety of first-instance and appellate courts, arbitration tribunals, and regulatory tribunals, in England and Wales, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands (including the Privy Council).
Alex is frequently instructed as counsel in ‘Bermuda Form’ international insurance arbitrations, and associated legal proceedings.
As an international litigator and arbitrator, Alex has been involved in numerous cross-border disputes involving jurisdictions such as the Bahamas, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Jersey, the Isle of Man, Singapore, the Turks & Caicos Islands, and the Marshall Islands, as well as Canada, Australia, the USA, Latin America, and Europe.
As a Queen's Counsel of England and Wales, based in Bermuda, Alex is willing and able to accept instructions to act on a special or ad hoc admission basis in the Courts of various British Overseas Territories such as the British Virgin Islands and the Cayman Islands.
Alex has also provided expert evidence on Bermuda law and English law for use in foreign legal proceedings, including in New York, California, Massachusetts, England and Wales, and Sweden. He has also assisted with the drafting of an Amicus Brief on issues of Bermuda law for submission to the United States Supreme Court.
Alex is a member of a number of professional organizations including: INSOL International and RISA Bermuda, COMBAR (Honorary Member), the Chancery Bar Association (Overseas Member), and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Alex is also an active member of the Legal Focus Group and the Trust Law Reform Sub-Committee of the Bermuda Business Development Agency, and an appointed member of Bermuda’s Copyright Tribunal and Bermuda’s Human Rights Commission.
Alex is the author of many publications on issues of Bermuda law, and he is regularly invited to speak at conferences and seminars, both in Bermuda and internationally.
Earlier in his career at the London Bar, Alex worked as a Judicial Assistant to the Court of Appeal for England and Wales (assigned to Lord Woolf, the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales); and he also spent time on a Pegasus Scholarship in Australia, working as a Judicial Assistant to the Federal Court of Australia (assigned to Chief Justice Michael Black).
Alex has been recognized for many years by The Legal 500, Chambers Global, Who’s Who Legal, and Euromoney's Expert Guides as a leading Asset Recovery, Dispute Resolution, Insurance and Reinsurance, and Trusts lawyer, both in Bermuda and internationally.
